The colored flags go up on Broadway around 5:30 p.m. By six, the parking lot behind 4895 is full, the food trucks are lined at Emerald City, and the Roots Music Project stage is testing the mic. Three hours later it's over, and Broadway goes back to being Broadway.
If you already live in NoBo, First Friday is easy to write off as an art event you can attend or skip. The more accurate read is that First Friday is the one evening each month when every era of the North Broadway corridor, from the 1958 shopping center at Alpine to the 2024 café openings north of Yarmouth, opens its doors on the same clock. That's the frame worth using in 2026, because the state just made the arrangement official and the tenant mix is shifting fast underneath it.
The three-hour clock
NoBo First Friday runs 6 to 9 p.m. as an open studios art walk in the North Boulder Art District, and the geography is tight enough that a resident on foot can cover it end to end. Studios and galleries are located along Broadway from Violet to Highway 36, with bright-colored flags marking participation and a map published fresh each month.

The four addresses that hold the walk together
Most residents can name Emerald City and stop there. The organization actually pivots on four venues, and knowing which is which will save you a lap.

The venues anchoring the district include Emerald City, NoBo Art Center at 4929 Broadway, NoBo Bus Stop Gallery at 4895 Broadway, NoBo on the Corner at Yarmouth and Broadway, and Artist Alley across Broadway, with First Friday also including studios east of Broadway such as Studio Mews and Kin Studio and Gallery. NoBo on the Corner opened in November 2024 thanks to a partnership with Boulder Housing Partners, which is why it feels newer than the rest of the walk even though the flags treat it as equal footing.
Scale check for anyone who assumes this is still a scrappy affair: in 2024 the district drew over 8,000 visitors across 11 First Friday events, featuring 800 artists in 200 studios and venues. On any given First Friday you are one of roughly 700 people moving between the same handful of doors.
Where the evening eats
The food routing on a First Friday is the part longtime residents get wrong most often. If you park at the Bus Stop lot and try to eat inside Emerald City, you will wait. The better move is to eat on either end of the walk and treat the studios as the middle course.
South end, near the Ideal Broadway Shops and the Lucky's Market plaza: Ruzo Coffee at 3980 Broadway, Suite 104, opened in February 2024 and works for a pre-walk espresso before the sun drops. Two doors over at 3970 Broadway you have a 35-year Shanghai institution in China Gourmet, alongside Dagabi Cucina, the Spanish tapas and wood-fired concept that changed hands in May 2025 after the Westby family's 22-year tenure. Dagabi runs a daily happy hour from 5 to 6:30 and all-night specials on Tuesdays, which makes the 5:15 sit-down before a 6:00 walk genuinely practical.
North end, closer to the Bus Stop Gallery: Wapos reopened in October 2024 after a kitchen fire, in the small cottage house with a covered patio at the entrance of Emerald City, and is a go-to for fish tacos and margaritas on First Friday nights. A couple of blocks south, Bellota at 4580 N. Broadway is part of the group behind Corrida and Oak and specializes in regional Mexican cuisine with seasonal specials and top-shelf agave cocktails. If you want to stay closer to Lee Hill Road, Upslope Brewing and Bookcliff Vineyards sit next door to each other and welcome First Friday art walkers. For a lower-key pre-walk, Wapos, Tierra y Fuego and La Choza cover the taco question, and Dagabi Cucina works for a longer sit-down.
Morning-after logistics matter too if you host guests on Friday night. Fresh-made pastries from Lucky's, Moxie or Spruce Confections with espresso from Amante or Ruzo, on one of their patios, is the standard NoBo Saturday.
What the Creative District designation actually changed
This is the piece most residents haven't tracked. The area was awarded a Creative District designation by the State of Colorado in late 2025, an arduous process with a long certification application, and the designation comes with funding the district plans to use to bring more visibility to the area.
The practical implications for someone who lives here:
"We want to continue arts education and community engagement and economic development in North Boulder, which we haven't seen before. We'd really like to help foster growth in that particular area of town." That is district leadership summarizing the plan behind the designation in The Boulder Magazine's Feb/March 2026 feature.
Read against the geography, that means the funding pressure is aimed at the stretch of Broadway between Alpine and Highway 36 rather than at Pearl or the Hill. Expect the visual signals to intensify first: more murals, more programmed sidewalk activations on non-First-Friday weekends, and the continued build-out of Second Saturdays as a quieter daytime alternative. NoBo Second Saturdays run 1 to 4 p.m. and offer local artists, food vendors, musicians and free family-friendly activities, and for residents with kids the Saturday version is often the more workable one.
The Ideal Broadway signal
The other 2026 story running underneath First Friday is what's happening at Alpine and Broadway, the anchor at the south end of the district. The North Broadway Shopping Center, currently known as Ideal Broadway Shops, opened in 1958 as a product of post-World War II growth and was designed by prominent Boulder architect Hobart Wagener. This is the corner the district's food routing quietly depends on.
In February 2026, Boulder Reporting Lab documented that the Pekoe café is nearing the end of its lease, with the owner hoping to gracefully bow out or find another Boulder location where rent is affordable. Read alongside the Dagabi ownership change and the Ruzo opening, the pattern is clear: the plaza that has fed the First Friday walk for two decades is turning over its tenant mix on a compressed schedule. If you have a favorite bench at Pekoe, use it in 2026 rather than assume it will be there in 2027.
Slightly further afield but relevant: Boulder County voted in November 2025 to sell the North Broadway Complex at the northeast corner of Iris and Broadway, 108,165 square feet of office space across five buildings on 17.5 acres, to ABMG, LLC for $26 million, with the buyer indicating a proposed use of senior housing and congregate care while preserving the North Boulder Little League fields. That is the largest single land-use change pending on the corridor, and it will reshape the drive up Broadway well before it reshapes First Friday.
A resident's playbook for the rest of 2026
If you want the walk to feel routine rather than performative, a few practices that work:
- Park once at the Bus Stop Apartment lot behind 4895 Broadway and walk. The SKIP bus runs Broadway from North Boulder through downtown to South Boulder, so guests coming from the Hill or Pearl don't need a second car.
- Pick up the printed map at the NoBo tent rather than trying to work from the phone. The online map is updated monthly, and colorful flags mark participating spaces, but the paper version is faster in a crowd.
- Treat July 3 and August 7 as the two crowded evenings and October 2 as the sleeper. Fall light hits Emerald City's green paint in a way the summer sun washes out.
- Use the Bus Stop Gallery's regular hours for anything you want to actually buy. Regular hours are Thursday 12–3, Friday 12–6, Saturday 12–6, and Sunday 12–4. First Friday is for meeting the artist; Saturday afternoon is for the transaction.
- Combine one dinner and one gallery, not four galleries and no dinner. The map has more than forty studios open, and residents who try to sweep the whole thing every month burn out on it by September.
The larger point about living in NoBo in 2026 is that the corridor is being formalized in front of you. The State designation, the tenant turnover at Ideal Broadway, the Iris and Broadway sale, and the compressed 6-to-9 window of First Friday are all versions of the same story, which is that this stretch of Broadway has decided what it wants to be. Homeowners who bought here five or ten years ago made a bet on that identity before it had a name. The name is now the North Boulder Creative District, and the equity of the neighborhood will track how well the identity holds up.
